I love working with the Chakras and I’m currently creating a new birth education and Pregnancy Yoga course based on the Chakras. The Sacral Chakra is the centre of your emotions, your creativity, your desires and sexual expression and it's all about movement, fluidity, expansion and pleasure.
The key emotions to work with here are joy and pleasure. If this Chakras is balanced your emotions are balanced and you find joy and pleasure in life and in your body. You will be creative and can easily go with the flow.
If it’s overactive, then over indulgence of the senses as well as being in an emotional rollercoaster can occur. If it’s underactive then you won’t allow yourself to feel your emotions and stuff them down and you will also not allow yourself to experience pleasure and in fact you might feel some shame and guilt around sex and your sexuality. Your creative energy will also be low.
This Chakra is very active during pregnancy as new life is being created in your womb and you will be very much in your feminine energy.
The themes for working with this Chakra are feeling your emotions fully. Your emotions are like water. They flow and change like the tides. The key is to let them wash over you, feel them fully and then let them go. Pleasure, creativity, fluidity and going with the flow are also key themes here.
Working on this Chakra during Pregnancy is ideal as feminine movements like hips circles are something that women do intuitively during birth as it helps baby to descend through the pelvis.
Dancing is great during all stages of life and especially during pregnancy (and birth!) as it allows you to get out of your head and into your body, allowing your body to take the lead and move how it wants to move. Plus it's fun!
Developmentally this chakra becomes most active when a baby starts to move around as this Chakra is all about movement, change and exploration of the world around them as they start to move towards the things they desire. It’s here also that 1 becomes 2 and babies realise that their mother and them are not the same person but 2 separate souls.
Below is a 20 minute flowing belly dance and yoga inspired routine to help you get into the flow of the Sacral Chakra. It’s suitable for every body including pregnancy and no props are required. I’m not even using a mat!
